United Transportation Union Endorses Jill Long Thompson
ARGOS, IN - In another endorsement from Indiana's working men and women, the United Transportation Union formally endorsed Jill Long Thompson for Governor on Tuesday, February 26, 2008.
As the largest rail union in North America, the United Transportation Union (UTU) represents active and retired railroad, bus and mass transit workers throughout the United States and Canada. In Indiana, its members include conductors, engineers, switchmen, brakemen, trainmen, yardmasters, bus drivers and commuter rail operators.
"Jill Long Thompson has the experience, integrity and vision to put Indiana back on track." said Thomas Hensler, the UTU's Indiana state director. "As a member of Congress she consistently fought against the privatization of Amtrak and for our jobs, and as Governor we know she will do the same."
"The UTU enthusiastically endorses Jill for Governor - and we pledge our full support as her campaign moves forward."
Along with the UTU, Long Thompson has received several other labor endorsements, including the United Steelworkers, the Service Employee International Union, Communication Workers of America, the American Federation of Government Employees, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union and Local #446 of Association of Federal, State, County and Municipal Employees. She was previously endorsed by UTU Local #298.
"It's an honor to have the UTU and their members supporting my candidacy," said Long Thompson. "Together with the working men and women of this state, as Governor, I will fight to protect our jobs, grow the economy, secure affordable healthcare for all Hoosiers and improve our workforce and education programs so every citizen has an opportunity to achieve his or her full potential."
Long Thompson represented Northeast Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives serving from 1989 to 1995. She also served as U.S. Under Secretary of Agriculture for Rural Development from 1995 to 2001. She received her B.S. in Business from Valparaiso University and her M.B.A and Ph.D. in Business from Indiana University. A former school teacher, Long Thompson most recently served as CEO of The National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy. Long Thompson and her husband Don Thompson, a commercial airline pilot, live on their family farm in Marshall County.
