An Honorable Action by a Politician!!!

A couple of days ago, at a political gathering, we saw something that we don’t often see in politics.  We saw a politician behave ethically.

At a political gathering for Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain, Cincinnati talk show host, Bill Cunningham, working as a warm up act and preparing to introduce McCain attacked Barak Obama, emphasizing his middle name – Hussein – in a way manner, which attempted to tie Obama to Muslim Jihadists.  Cunningham’s action was a thinly veiled attempt to raise racist and religious prejudice against Obama, by depicting him as something he is not a Muslim and by association to tie him to Saddam Hussein.  It was an odious display and the organizers of the event should be ashamed.

McCain, who was not present at the time of Cunningham’s diatribe, demonstrated himself to be a man of honor.  When he was informed of what happened, he immediately took responsibility for the event and denounced in clear terms Cunningham’s behavior.  He said, "I take responsibility. I repudiate what he said. I will not tolerate anyone that denigrates either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama."  Good for John McCain.  That sort of high-principled behavior is not seen often among politicians.

Readers should not construe this post as an endorsement of McCain for president.  I really do hope that he does not become our next president.  Nevertheless, I respect John McCain and I think we should recognize honorable behavior when we see it, because in today’s political milieu, it does not happen often.
