Tuesday Statehouse CDCPTR Visit/Rally
By Chris Hiatt
Today was a great and noble effort by the citizens of Delaware County. In a final push to bring some sanity to the circus at the Statehouse, a contingent of nearly 50 people made the trip down by both bus and auto. We were met there by activists from as far away as Hammond and of course many from the Indianapolis area.
Assembling with a group of Realtors, the Rally effort spent the first 45 minutes in dialog with Governor Daniels in the rotunda outside his office. It was a great introduction and experience for those in our midst who were on their first venture into the political jungle of the State's General Assembly. The Governor was very generous and patient with the multitude of citizens wanting to burn his ear on the issue of property tax reform and more important property tax elimination. He remained optimistic that the General Assembly would have something "signable" on his desk by the end of the week, and was anxious to bring permanent and meaningful relief to the taxpayers.
The rest of the morning and early afternoon was spent mixing it up with our local State Representatives, Bill Davis and Dennis Tyler as well as our Senator Sue Errington. Of specific importance was our opportunity to address Luke Kenley, who sits on the point of the final negotiations going on. The consistent theme was that the current quagmire of special interest and political posturing was not going to be accepted by the citizenery and the final legistlation had to be comprehensive, simple and permanently protected. Did they listen? Yes, I think so. Does it mean that they'll be able to find a way to make a square peg fit into a round hole? That remains to be seen. I guess we'll know in short order. After this session, the citizens will probably have to have a "cleanup rally" at the Statehouse to mop up all the manure that's spilled out onto the hallowed halls.
