Racism still exists in Indiana.
I guess that statement will not come as a great surprise to anyone. Indeed, at least at some level, racism exists throughout our nation. However, that odious behavior seems particularly virulent in Indiana. Young, black and white, campaign volunteers for Barack Obama found themselves the target of racist slurs and other obscenities as they canvassed for their candidate. An article in the May 14th., Indianapolis Star describes some of the events.
In Muncie, campaign workers, promoting Obama, were called racially derogatory names. They were subjected to vicious harangues, spewing ugly racial stereotypes. In Kokomo, angry motorists screamed racial slurs at Obama-campaign volunteers as the volunteers held up signs supporting Obama. One campaign canvasser actually had dogs turned on her. In Vincennes, the Obama-campaign headquarters was vandalized. Windows were smashed and others were painted with racial slurs and references to Rev. Wright. The Obama campaign ran into similar actions in Pennsylvania, Ohio and other places in the nation, but it seems not to the same extent as in Indiana.
The Obama campaign has chosen to take the high road and has played down these incidents. Barack Obama focus on what he calls the “…core decency of Americans from all walks of life.” However we in Indiana should be mindful of these incidents. I had begun to think that our nation and our state was finally getting past our racist past, but obviously here in Indiana we still have a long way to go. I have lived in Indiana now for about 25 years and I have been proud to call myself a Hoosier. Today I believe we can all be a little less proud of that designation.

I am hearing a lot of folks talk about how they like what He is saying and the way He handles himself. There is even a new Republicans for Obama group forming in Muncie . . . first there are the Regan Democrates and now the Obama Republicans?

Hello volunteer47305, thanks for the comment.
Obama Republicans, very interesting!!!! I'd like to see how that movement goes.
I am amazed we are not now
I am amazed we are not now hearing more about this as it is seeminly growing. I am not a bandwagon person, but I have to admit he has pizzas in many ways. That or maybe I am just so tired of the same Ole, same Ole, I am ready to drink from any-other fountain that looks and smells different?
Life as an Indipendant is always interesting.

Hello Anonymous... thanks for the comment.
You're right and and racial incidents will continue to grow as we get into the general election. I think the reason we are not hearing more about it is that Obama is basically tying to avoid that particular conversation. One of his campaign strategies is to be the democratic candidate for president who happens to be black. Not the black, democratic candidate for president. He seems to think that a frank and straightforward discussion about race in America would detract from his campaign message. Perhaps, he is correct, but I think it is a discussion we need to have.
