State Police Conducting Annual School Bus Inspections
Teams Around The State Working To Keep Buses Safe
FORT WAYNE, IN - Teams of Indiana State Troopers and State Police Motor Carrier Inspectors assigned to the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) are currently conducting state mandated annual school bus inspections state wide.
The Indiana State Police Department is tasked with conducting annual inspections of almost 15,000 school buses. School buses which are 12 years old or older are required to be inspected every six months. Currently there are approximately 1500 buses which fall in this category.
The annual inspection is very thorough and every aspect of the bus is inspected. Inspectors check brakes, tires, steering mechanisms, exhaust systems, lighting inside and out, emergency exits, and even the cleanliness of the buses. First aid kits, fire extinguishers, and the condition of the seats in the bus are also included in the annual inspections.
A bus is either approved, rejected, or placed out-of-service after the inspection. An approved bus passed the inspection with no violations. A rejected bus has a minor violation which will have no effect on the safe operation of the bus and the violation must be repaired within thirty days. A bus designated to be out-of-service was found with a major safety violation which would effect the safe operation of the bus. A bus designated out-of-service may not be used to transport students until the major violation has been repaired.
