Workshop to Reduce Bullying, Fighting in Youth

Indiana Youth Institute to offer workshop on north and south sides of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is offering a workshop to teach youth workers in Central Indiana ways they can work with angry children, reduce fighting and prevent bullying.

Youth workers, teachers, community leaders, youth ministers, counselors, social workers, librarians and others who impact the lives of youth in Central Indiana can register for the workshop, "Conflict Resolution & Anger Management for Tweens & Teens."

The workshop will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with on-site registration at 8:30 a.m. The first session will be held Aug. 18 at the Holiday Inn Express, 5302 Victory Dr., Indianapolis, 46203. The location is just south of I-465 and Emerson Ave. on the south side of Indianapolis. The second session will be held Sept. 8 on Indianapolis' north side at the Junior Achievement Conference Center, 7435 N. Keystone Ave, 46240.

Naomi Drew, recognized around the world as an expert on conflict resolution, peacemaking and parenting, will teach the workshop. Her work has been featured in magazines and newspapers across the country, including Time, Parents and the New York Times. She has been a guest on syndicated radio and national TV, and has served as a parenting expert for Classroom Close-ups, an Emmy award-winning public television show.

Participants will gain practical, concrete strategies that will help adolescents and pre-adolescents work out conflicts instead of fighting, effectively manage anger using calming strategies, deal with bullying and work together productively. The content for the workshop comes from Drew's award-winning book, "The Kids' Guide to Working Out Conflicts: How to Keep Cool, Stay Safe, and Get Along."

This workshop also will be presented in New Albany, Evansville, Bloomington, Merrillville, South Bend (sponsored by the Gurley Leep Automotive Family) and Fort Wayne. For more information about the workshops in those cities, go to www.iyi.org.

Cost of the training is $45, but individuals can save $5 per session by registering online with a credit card for this or other IYI trainings at www.iyi.org/training_registration. Continuing Education Hours for the workshop are available through the National Association of Social Workers and the Indiana Association of Prevention Professionals. Parks and recreation professionals may request Continuing Education Units through the Indiana Parks and Recreation Association after attending the workshop. And, Continuing Renewal Units (CRUs) are available for teachers, school counselors and other licensed educators.

This training is supported in part by the Clowes Fund and the Nicholas H. Noyes, Jr., Memorial Foundation, Inc.

The Indiana Youth Institute promotes the healthy development of children and youth by serving the institutions and people of Indiana who work on their behalf.
