IDEM to unveil new “Hoosiers Care” initiative at Indiana State Fair

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) will unveil its newest outreach initiative, “Hoosiers Care,” during this year’s Indiana State Fair, set for Wednesday, August 6 through Sunday, August 17 in Indianapolis.

“The Indiana State Fair provides the perfect opportunity to begin implementing our newest outreach effort designed to educate Hoosiers on what they can do to protect their environment,” said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. “Hoosiers Care encourages each of us to focus on small things that we can do every day to reduce unhealthy emissions and promote a cleaner and healthier environment.”

An added bonus of making simple behavioral changes is saving money. “Walking to work or carpooling, using compact fluorescent light bulbs, recycling paper products, turning off lights when not needed, and using electric-powered lawn equipment can save money and our environment,” said Easterly. “With all of us making small changes in our daily lives, we can see big results with an improvement in the quality of our air and the quality of our lives.”

IDEM is working with three other state agencies to promote the Hoosiers Care initiative: the Indiana Department of Energy & Defense Development, the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority and the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor. All four agencies will be located in the same area and share the Hoosiers Care theme. After completing a Hoosiers Care pledge form, some visitors will receive a free compact fluorescent light bulb.
