New Accelerate 465 northbound lanes open Wednesday
Noise barrier construction to continue through the winter
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Westside motorists should stay alert for new Accelerate 465 traffic patterns that take effect before the morning rush hour on Wednesday, October 22. For the first time, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will open four through lanes for I-465 northbound between I-74 and I-65.
The changes will also affect 38th Street traffic at the bridge over I-465. Starting Wednesday, eastbound 38th Street traffic entering I-465 northbound should stay in the right lane to use the new loop ramp. Both 38th Street ramps will then merge behind concrete barrier before entering I-465 northbound.
INDOT contractors anticipate an additional week of road work before the new I-465 southbound lanes will open. Noise barrier construction will continue through the winter, closing the right shoulder and auxiliary lanes where crews are working.
As one of the first segments of I-465 ever built, the eleven miles of interstate between West 56th Street and S.R. 67/Kentucky Avenue cannot handle existing traffic volumes at peak periods. Accelerate 465 is a Major Moves project that will add lanes to I-465 and reconfigure interchanges to promote the free-flow movement of traffic. This project also includes pedestrian crossings, noise barriers and other infrastructure improvements that will benefit nearby residents.
Gov. Mitch Daniels' Major Moves highway program capitalizes on Indiana's strategic location at the Crossroads of America by building a superior road infrastructure. When Major Moves is complete in 2015, nearly $12 billion in critical highway projects will have been built. This innovative plan will bring jobs to the Hoosier State and leave a legacy for Indiana to be a global leader in distribution and logistics.
