INDOT Announces $58 Million Major Moves I-69 Project is Complete

I-69 from Coldwater Road to DuPont Road now open for holiday travel

ALLEN COUNTY, IN - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces today that the Major Moves I-69 added travel lanes project is now complete.  All three lanes on northbound and three lanes on southbound I-69, as well as loops and ramps at Coldwater Road interchange are now open.

The two-construction season project included adding an additional north and southbound lane, rehabilitation of north and southbound bridges over Beckett's Run and the replacement of the Auburn Road Bridge over I-69.  Other aspects of the project include construction of median concrete barrier walls, placement of four sections of sound barrier walls and sign modifications.

The limits of this project are on I-69 from approximately, the Coldwater Road interchange to the SR 1/ DuPont Road interchange.

Phase three, finishes the multi-year planned lane construction around Fort Wayne from the US 24 interchange to the SR 1/Dupont Road interchange, for a total of 16 miles.   The work was originally begun in 2003.

"As you know, this is a Major Moves project funded with the Toll Road lease proceeds," said Andy Brooks, President of Brooks Construction.  "Most of the Major Moves projects throughout the state are being awarded to Indiana based contractors. One of the most overlooked benefits of this is the infusion of those dollars into the local economy. This project is a great example at 58 million dollars."

"With any major road construction project, there are challenges and opportunities. During the 1 1/2
years of roadway construction, with only two lanes of traffic always open in each direction, this may have been an inconvenience, but it is the future that we must look to.  Besides the added capacity of one lane in the northbound and southbound lanes, now that the project is complete with a total of six lanes, the daily commute will be safer and easier, as well as the local economy's vitality stimulated, yet another benefit."

The three phases of I-69 are highlighted below with contractor's name, construction date and cost per phase.

. Phase 1, from US 24 interchange to Leesburg Road, was constructed by Ajax Construction, for $50 million, from 2003-2004.
. Phase 2, from Leesburg Road to Coldwater Road, was constructed by Walsh Construction, for $44 million, from 2004-2005.
. Phase 3, from Coldwater Road to DuPont Road, was constructed by Brooks Construction of Fort Wayne, Indiana, for $58 million, from 2007-2008.

Gov. Mitch Daniels' Major Moves transportation program capitalizes on Indiana's strategic location at the Crossroads of America by building a superior road infrastructure. When Major Moves is complete in 2015, nearly $12 billion in critical highway projects will have been built. This innovative plan will bring jobs to the Hoosier State and leave a legacy for Indiana to be a global leader in distribution and logistics.
