INDOT Plow Crews Battle Mix of Ice and Snow

664 plow crews treating state highways in southern and central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indiana Department of Transportation plowing crew's efforts have been compounded in the southern part of the state, because of the mix of snow and ice that has fallen there.

INDOT has responded to a request from Vectren, and is sending three bucket trucks to help remove ice-covered tree limbs from downed power lines in the far southern counties in Indiana.

Currently, INDOT crews are reporting downed power lines have knocked out electricity to some department facilities in Tell City, Birdseye, and Grantsburg.

Other facilities in Chrisney, Jasper, Chandler and Dale are without power, but operating on generator.

INDOT says following roads have been closed in southern Indiana:

  • In Spencer County: SR 162 from Santa Claus to Gentryville
  • In Spencer County: SR 545 from SR 62 to SR 66
  • In Dubois and Perry Counties: SR 145 from SR 37 to SR 64 in Dubois and Perry Counties
  • In Perry County: SR 66 from SR 62 to US 231 near Rockport
  • SR 211 at the junction of SR 11
  • SR 111 at Stucky Road
  • SR 62 west of Corydon
  • SR 160 between the 13 and 15 mile markers.

Other roads in southern and central Indiana are open, but remain snow covered and slippery for motorists.

As an example of the "sandwich" of snow and ice, INDOT reports that in the Vincennes area the storm dropped four inches of snow, two inches of ice and an additional seven and one-half inches of snow.

Some 664 plow trucks began putting brine, salt and sand on the roadways across INDOT districts in southern and central Indiana as early as 7:30 p.m. Monday.  They will continue work to clear the roads throughout the duration of the storm.

"As always," said Bruce Childs, deputy commissioner-Communications for INDOT, "we urge motorists who have to be on the highways to take it slow in ice and snow, and, if they don't need to be out, to stay home."
