Governor Daniels Selects Lt. Gov. Skillman to Oversee Stimulus Programs
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Governor Mitch Daniels today announced Lt. Governor Becky Skillman will oversee all state agencies' use of federal stimulus dollars that are expected to flow into Indiana when the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is signed into law.
"I've asked my partner, Becky Skillman, to lead our stimulus clearinghouse and make sure that the funds are properly and effectively spent," said Daniels. "Our goal is to put the money to use generating jobs as fast as or faster than any state in the nation."
Multiple state agencies, including the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, Indiana Department of Transportation, Department of Workforce Development, Office of Community and Rural Affairs, Office of Energy Development and others will receive money from the federal stimulus package. Lt. Gov. Skillman will work to ensure all programs fit under the state's plan for economic recovery.
"We will be the champions of speed," Lt. Gov. Skillman said. "But in our rush to create jobs and relief for Hoosiers, we want to ensure the assistance is broad-based, both economically and geographically."
While details are still emerging, it is estimated that Indiana will receive about $4 billion from the federal stimulus bill. Most of the money will be dedicated to specific agencies that will create action plans for its use. The Lt. Governor will make sure those plans meet federal guidelines and underscore the Governor's priority to move fast, create jobs, and leave a lasting investment - such as a road - that will benefit Hoosiers for years to come.
