State Trooper Arrests Wrong Way Driver on Interstate 69

FISHERS, IN - On Thursday, April 16, 2009, ar around 12:12 a.m. Indiana State Trooper Jason Williamson, Pendleton Post, responded to a call of a wrong way driver on Interstate 69.  The Indianapolis State Police Post had dispatched a wrong way driver on Interstate 465 minutes earlier.

Trooper Williamson located the driver, Tamera J. Sontich, 42, Fishers, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 69 just south of Fishers in Hamilton County.  Trooper Williamson activated his red lights and siren while approaching Sontich vehicle driving toward his state police car in an attempt to stop her.  Tamera Sontich continued driving northbound in the southbound lanes as Williamson passed her vehicle.  Trooper Williamson was able to turn around quickly and stop the Chevrolet Equinox before a tragic crash could have occurred.

During conversation with the driver Trooper Williamson detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Sontich and her vehicle.  A subsequent breath test showed Sontich was over the Indiana legal limit of .08 per cent.  Tamera Sontich was incarcerated in the Hamilton County jail in Noblesville.

The quick actions of citizens calling 911 to report the wrong way driver and Trooper Williamson’s quick response to the scene may have saved an innocent person from being struck head on by the wrong way driver.  Citizens are urged to call 911 to report drunk drivers.

Arrested and Charged

  • Tamera J. Sontich, 42, Fishers
  • Charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Criminal Recklessness, Wrong Way Driving, and Failure to Yield to a moving emergency vehicle
