PERU, IN - The Indiana State Police, at the request of the Peru Police Department, is investigating a police action shooting in which a Peru, IN, man was shot by a Peru police officer responding to a domestic dispute.

Preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police Detective Tony Frawley revealed last night, at approximately 7:10 p.m., officers from the Peru Police Department responded to a 911call of an ongoing domestic dispute, involving a gun, at a home in the 500 block of East 2nd Street in Peru, IN. One of the responding officers was allowed inside the residence where he confronted Stewart K. Wolfe, 39.

It is believed at some point; Wolfe displayed a semi-automatic hand gun and pointed it at the officer. The officer purportedly drew his department issued 40 caliber Glock handgun and fired one shot, striking Wolfe in the torso. Wolfe was incapacitated. Officers called for medical personnel and started performing CPR. Despite their life saving efforts, Wolfe was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were four children in the home at the time of the shooting. They were not injured. Wolfe’s girlfriend, who exited the home upon officers arrival, suffered a contusion to her head which was allegedly caused by Wolfe during the domestic dispute. No police officers were injured.

Wolfe was a resident of the home where the shooting occurred

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. This is required by the standard operating procedures for the Peru Police Department. The officer’s name will be released after all of the resources necessary to deal with the traumatic experience of a line of duty shooting have been put into place.

This is an ongoing investigation by the Indiana State Police. No additional information is available for release at this time.
