Committee approves standards for energy efficient state buildings
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Senate Energy and Environmental Affairs committee approved House Bill (HB) 1063 sponsored by State Sen. Karen Tallian (D-Portage) with a vote of 6 to 2 today. The proposal would require that state government buildings over 5,000 square feet, excluding local government buildings and school corporation buildings, must be designed, constructed or renovated to achieve environment-friendly and energy efficiency standards.
"If energy standards are implemented in the design and construction stages of buildings around the state, the minimal costs of making a building more energy efficient along with the long-term energy savings will save taxpayers money," said Tallian. "It is an investment that needs to be made."
Tallian says she hopes that the state's move to promote energy efficient standards in new construction and renovations will set an example for private development while reducing long-term operational costs.
HB 1063 is now eligible for further consideration by the full Senate.
