UPDATE: One Dead after Fleeing Police

Marion County - Today, at approximately 3:20 a.m., a man fled from State Police and crashed his car, resulting in his own death.

Preliminary investigation revealed Trooper Kyle Freeman attempted to stop a vehicle, a white 1991 Toyota, for a D.U.I. investigation.  The vehicle was southbound on I-65 just north of Southport Road and exited onto westbound Southport Road.  As the suspect vehicle approached McFarland Street, it passed another vehicle in a no passing zone and accelerated to a high rate of speed continuing west on Southport Road.  Trooper Freeman temporarily lost sight of the vehicle as it drove over railroad tracks just west of McFarland Street.

As Trooper Freeman drove over the railroad tracks, he found the suspect vehicle had crashed into a building coming to rest inside the Southport Antique Mall at the intersection of Southport Road and West Street.  The vehicle apparently went airborne after crossing the tracks, lost control and collided with the building.  The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of his injuries from this crash.

***The driver of this crash has been positively identified and his family has been notified.

DECEASED:

Alberto Vazquez-Tello, 21, Indianapolis, IN.

During the course of the investigation, it was discovered Mr. Vazquez-Tello had an active warrant issued for his arrest through Marion County for Public Intoxication.  Furthermore, he was driving on a suspended driver's license at the time of the crash.

This is an on-going investigation.
