Millions Worth of Unclaimed Property
STATEHOUSE—Hoosiers in Delaware, Jay and Randolph Counties are currently missing out on millions of dollars worth of unclaimed property. Rep. Bill Davis (R-Portland), in accordance with Attorney General Greg Zoeller, is informing residents how they can claim their missing property.
Unclaimed property has many forms but commonly comes from investment earnings, insurance proceeds, benefits, wages, and money from savings and checking accounts. The state holds these items for up to 25 years.
Delaware, Jay and Randolph County residents have over 40,000 pieces of unclaimed property totaling nearly $4.8 million. Over $350 million dollars of unclaimed property is available statewide.
“Everyone can use extra cash and thousands of Hoosiers have some with their name on it,” Rep. Davis said. “I just want to help people claim what is rightfully theirs. I know if a family member or myself had unclaimed money I would want someone to tell me how to retrieve it.”
Many Hoosiers are already collecting their property. In 2009, more than 55,000 properties totaling $42.2 million were returned to people all over the state. Not all unclaimed property comes in the form of money. In fact, nearly one percent of assets are tangible items often found in a safety deposit box.
“I hope we can to distribute all of the unclaimed property in Indiana,” Rep. Davis said. “Take a few seconds to look up someone you know and let them know if they have money that is theirs.”
