Pedestrian killed, interstate shutdown

A horrific New Year's Day accident killed a pedestrian and shutdown Interstate 69 this morning at the 19 mile marker near Lapel.

.James S. Vendel, 61, Fortville, apparently ran in front of a semi tractor driven by Marty J. Collins, 54, Fort Wayne, who was headed south on the interstate. Vendel's car had stopped and he was standing in front of it when he ran in front of the semi, according to witnesses. Indiana State Police were unable to immediately determine why Vendel ran into oncoming traffic.

The interstate was shut down as Indiana State Police investigated the crash just before noon. The ISP's crash reconstruction team is investigating along with Trooper Ron Huff and the Madison County Coroner's office.
