Family weekend at Ball State, Cross County Tournament at Sportsplex fills Muncie, IN hotel rooms

MUNCIE, IN - Sports, sports and more sports will fill hotel rooms locally this weekend with Family Weekend at Ball State University along with a huge high school cross country tournament hosted by Delta High School.

That one two punch of high school and collegiate sports with BSU playing South Florida Saturday afternoon is just what James Mansfield, who runs Muncie's Visitors Bureau always likes in the fall since full hotel rooms mean more revenue to the visitors bureau that runs the eastside Muncie Sportsplex through a non-profit arm.

Family Weekend at Ball State started as a way to get parents back to campus to check on their kids higher education and is now a full blown entertainment complete with an Aerosmith cover band, golf tournament and plenty of other sports besides the football game.

Ball State is definitely pumped after long haired kicker Steve Schott booted a last minute field goal to beat Indiana University at Bloomington last Saturday in an offensive foot race ending in a 41-39 victory. All of the tweets, posts and texts after the game gave the fighting Cardinals new life after that road kill by Clemson the week before.

The cross country matchup brings more than 30 teams throughout the state to Muncie to run around the Sportsplex property. Delta hosts the event and fielded a pretty good team of its own.

It's those high school sports, Mansfield says, that helps fill the rooms to keep tourism and visitor programs going. Last winter, Ball State hosted the state girls' volleyball finals that brought thousands of people to Muncie to watch Delaware County teams dominate the competition.
