Halloween Costumes 2012: Popular and Creative Costume Ideas

Best 2012 Creative and Funny Halloween Costume Ideas for the Whole Family

Staff Report

NDIANAPOLIS, IN - The season is changing and the first big holiday - Halloween 2012 - is quickly approaching. Smart parents are already starting to thinking about buying or making costumes. To help, we have put together a list of tips and suggestions for buying creative, funny, or scary costumes. We also have some tips for making homemade Halloween costumes this year for those who are on a budget.

Halloween Costumes for Boys

For baby boys, picking a costume is quite easy because they don't know how to talk and complain yet. On the other hand, they may cry and become upset if you try to fit them into a costume that doesn't fit well. Still, there are a lot of great ideas for small baby boys out there. From a peanut to a lion to a loaf of Wonder bread, there's something for all types of baby boys.

As boys get older, they are going to want to have a bigger say in what Halloween costume they get. If you're making a homemade costume with them, you want to make sure you involve them during every step of the process. This is the best way to make sure they are going to be happy with the finished product and you don't put a lot of time into something only to find out a few minutes before trick-or-treating or a school party that they loathe the costume.

If you're buying a costume, you don't have to spend a lot of money. Be creative and try to go with generic characters that make it easier to buy extra accessories. Instead of Johnny Depp and Captain Jack, for example, it is much cheaper to get a pirate costume and say your child is Captain Jack rather than actually buy a brand name costume.

Overall the best costume ideas for boys are going to come from the boys themselves. Whether it is a wrestler, a movie star, or a comic book hero (or villain) there are lots of great ideas out there. As long as you include them in the process, it's going to go a lot smoother for everyone involved.

Halloween Costumes for Girls

It is probably even easier to purchase or make a cute Halloween costume for a baby girl. Their cute factor is already so high that it doesn't take much to add to it. In fact, sometimes just a little bow or ribbon can be the perfect Halloween costume. As with baby boys, you want to make sure they are comfortable and safe as well.

For older girls, you are going to want to get their opinion on the costume as well. This is maybe more important than with some boys. As long as you take time to find out what they want to be, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with a costume for them. Whether you make it on your own or buy something online, you have a lot of possibilities to choose. From a generic character like a nurse, teacher, hippy or doctor, to more specific characters - like Alice from Alice in Wonderland - there are a lot of great choices out there.

Halloween Costumes for Dad

Not every father is a dad who wants to dress up for Halloween. For those who do, it can be great fun and a way to bond with your son or daughter. You might get some strange looks when you're out trick or treating with your family, but it's worth it. For dads who can't come up with a good idea on their own, it's a good idea to ask the children to see what they would like him to be. This might lead to an outrageous costume, for sure, but it's a great bonding experience for everyone involved.

Halloween Costumes for Mom

Most moms can probably get away with saying they are dressed up as a mom when they go trick-or-treating, but it can actually sometimes to be fun to dress up with the children. For those mothers who go the extra mile, there are a ton of ideas out there. If you are going to be around children, however, you want to make sure it's something that is appropriate for everyone to see, of course. This still leaves a lot of great ideas.

Costumes for the Whole Family

Here are some group Halloween costume ideas for the whole family.

  • Wizard of Oz - This is a tried and true group Halloween costume idea. For families large or small, there's a character for everyone. This is also a good idea for families of different sizes - ie it works for families large or small.
  • The Brady Bunch - IF you have a large family, why not go as the Brady Bunch? If you want to make it a little harder for people to guess, you can go as the family from Eight is Enough - or another obscure and older television show.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - This may be a bit too out there for some parents, but mom and dad and two little boys would make a great Kowabunga costume for Halloween this year.

Stay tuned as we bring you even more great Halloween costume ideas for 2012 in the weeks ahead.
