Group Seeking Donations for Teachers
Sponsored by Marsh Supermarkets, Muncie Community Schools and Delaware County School Corporations, The Back To School Teacher's Store is a new not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), community service organization, operated by volunteers. Although they began receiving donations last month, there's still a big need for donated items.
The Back To School Teacher's Store is located at 1803 West Purdue Avenue (See Map) in the former Ross Pharmacy/Post Office and adjacent Ross Supermarket warehouse buildings. Volunteers are at the store from 8:00 a.m. to Noon Monday through Friday.
The Back To School Teacher's Store is a free source of teaching materials and classroom supplies for teachers. Their mission is to provide children in the Muncie and Delaware County schools the basic tools for learning by collecting donated items from individuals and local businesses.
"We will accept anything that will fit into the trunk of a teacher's car, from a single item to a truck load," according to Jackie Johnston, Director of the non-profit group.
A study by the National School Supply and Equipment Association in 2004 reported that teachers nationwide spent an average of $458 of their own money on school supplies. (Source: Washington Post) When a child attends school with adequate classroom supplies, they have a better chance of succeeding.
According to Johnston, for every dollar donated, around $15 of materials are made available to teachers for free.
The store will open to Muncie and Delaware County teachers once they receive enough donation to fill the store shelves.
