LAPEL, IN - A rural Anderson man accused of murder remains in jail after his friend was found shot to death.

Malcolm D. Cobb, 45, faces felony murder after the shooting in a home near Lapel.

Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said authorities were called to the scene in the 6400 block of County Road 300-S around 3 a.m. Tuesday following up a report of a shooting.

 The victim, Spencer Smith, 22 , was shot multiple times, according to Madison County Coroner Marian Dunnichay. She would not say whether Smith was shot with a handgun or assault rifle, pending a forensic autopsy performed Wednesday at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

 Cobb  faces felony rape charges in another case, according to court records, and he reportedly called authorities and admitted to shooting the victim, the sheriff said. A witness to the shooting also has been interviewed.

 Formal charges are still pending with the Madison County ;prosecutor's office.
