Many Questions as man (Vietnam Vet) holds boy in underground bunker in Alabama
MIDLAND CITY, AL - Jimmy Lee Dykes, is suspected of boarding a crowded school bus in Midland City on Tuesday and killing the driver dead as well as taking a 5-year-old boy hostage. He is believed to be holed up in an underground bunker on his property.
According to CBS affiliate WKRG, James Arrington, the police chief of Pinckard (a nearby town), says "Dykes and the boy are in a bunker that's about 4 feet underground and has about 6-by-8 feet of floor space."
According to police, they are communicating with him through a a ventilation pipe in the bunker. The boy has been watching TV in the bunker, according to state Rep. Steve Clouse. He also said the bunker has electricity and food.
Some officials are saying that Dykes is well known in the area for his anti-government views.
"He's against the government - starting with Obama on down," Arrington told local reporters. "He doesn't like law enforcement or the government telling him what to do. He's just a loner."
The bus driver who was killed, Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, was called a hero by locals because he gave his life to protect the 21 students aboard his bus.
