Indiana School Nutrition Association announces 2014 School Food Service Employee of the Year: Debbie Wombles

INDIANAPOLIS – On Saturday, May 3rd the Indiana School Nutrition Association (ISNA) will award Debbie Wombles as the 2014 School Food Service Employee of the Year. The Palms – located at 2353 East Perry Road in Plainfield – will host the 17th annual ISNA Awards Luncheon on May 2nd and 3rd.
School corporations from around Indiana nominated their best school service personnel for this award. Nominees were required to have at least two years of work experience in school food service and possess outstanding attributes in customer service, attitude, professionalism and performance.
Debbie Wombles, a Cafeteria Manager from Liberty Early Elementary in Decatur Township has served her school corporation since 1998. Starting in the dish room at Decatur Middle School, she quickly moved her way up to Assistant Manager at Decatur High School in 2007 and eventually became the Cafeteria Manager at Liberty Early Elementary. Through the years, Wombles dedicated herself to becoming one of the most well respected members of her school community. Her hard work and dedication to school food services led the ISNA to choose her as this year’s winner.
Liberty Early Elementary school principal Susan Bryant describes Wombles as, “always willing to make the entire school experience a special one for our students and families.” She went on to say, “Debbie does all of her work with a smile. She has a kind word for each person she encounters and is always quick to help others. She provides an example for her staff of being ‘customer friendly’, and all of our cafeteria ladies follow her lead.”
"On behalf of the Indiana Department of Education, I want to congratulate Debbie on this award," said Glenda Ritz, Indiana's Superintendent of Public Instruction.
"Every day, thousands of Hoosiers dedicate themselves to ensure that our students attend schools that are safe, supportive and nurturing and I want to thank all the food service workers in the state that ensure our children receive nutritious meals."
