FREE PRESS REPORT
MUNCIE, INDIANA (NEWS) - The Muncie Symphony Orchestra will kick off their free outdoor concert series with their 34th Festival on the Green on Saturday, June 14 on the Ball State University Arts Terrace, with activities beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The Festival on the Green features the MACC Arts Fair with area artists, a community picnic contest, door prizes and a free performance by the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. This year’s event theme is Beach Party and features a variety of works about the beach, water and summertime, with selections from Gershwin, Bach and Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” among others.
“It’s a fun free concert - it’s a Muncie beach party! It’s a pops concert so we’ll have medleys from the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffet but we’ll have some pieces from Anderson and Vivaldi as well. There’s something for everybody,” said Artistic Director Douglas Droste.
The Festival on the Green also marks the finale of the MSO’s ongoing Super Conductor 2014 fundraiser competition in which audiences vote via donations ($1.00 equals one vote) for the community member they want to see conduct the MSO at the Festival on the Green. This year’s contestants are George Branam, MD, a pathologist at IU BMH, Cheryl Crowder, Events Director for the Downtown Development Partnership and Steve Lindell, Vice President and Director of Operations at Woof Boom Radio.
Admission to the event and participation in the picnic contest is free. Picnic tables are available to rent for $20 and include seating for eight and plastic table covers. Display booths at the MACC Arts Fair are free to artists and $25 - $50 for area businesses.
