Union Chapel SERVE Week Ending with Big Event

By Heather Collins

MUNCIE, INDIANA (NEWS) - Union Chapel will host its 13th annual “SERVE Week” this Friday. The event will take place in the parking lot of Union Chapel at 4622 N Broadway Ave from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The parking lot is located a half-mile from the Muncie Mall.

The event is completely free to the public and will include carnival games, inflatable games, a rock climbing wall, lemonade shake-ups, entertainment stage, dunk tank, craft tents, hamburgers and hot dogs and more.

“I think events like SERVE Week at Union Chapel are important because they play a vital role in connecting children, youth and adults to the city in which they live. We tend to underestimate the value that service and ‘giving back’ has upon both those in need who receive help, as well as the ones doing the acts,” said Jeff Hughes, event coordinator. “Children and youth learn that they can make a difference right now and they don't have to wait to ‘grow up’ or move out of Muncie to connect with those around them in need.  It's great to hear youth months after SERVE who have connected with a local agency and are still serving with them!  One of the best lessons our leaders instill in participants at every age-group is that SERVE Week is not about a week... it's about a lifestyle of loving others and having compassion upon those in need.”

The event helps the youth of our community focus on what Union Chapel refers to as “the 4-Ms”: mentor, model, motivate and mobilize.

Union Chapel had a desire to make a significant impact on the community and began hosting SERVE week in 2002. The first event involved 35 youth working in the Muncie community for one week. The event has now grown to include more than 300 youth.

This week, during the 13th Annual SERVE Week, the volunteers have helped serve at Wayside Mission, Muncie Mission, Blood N Fire Ministries, YMCA, Second Harvest Food Bank, Center Township Trustees, Delaware County Housing Neighborhood, Buley Center, Morning Side Neighborhood, McCulloch Park and more.

SERVE week culminates this Friday with a free community-wide celebration called “Party in the Parking Lot.” This year’s theme is “Love Come to Life” and Union Chapel encourages local children and youth to let their love for Muncie and others come to life through service projects all over the city.
