Man Charged in Anderson Pocket Bike Death
The Anderson Herald Bulletin is reporting that William N. Raison, of Greenfield, was celebrating his 21st birthday early last Saturday morning when he struck and killed a man riding a pocket bike. Melanie D. Hayes wrote that he "is being preliminarily charged with reckless homicide and operating while intoxicated causing a death, both Class C felonies; and failure to stop resulting in death, a Class D felony."
It seems Mr. Raison just kept going, with the bike still attached to his car. The police followed pieces of the bike and gouges in the road about a mile before discovering Raison's abandoned car. Raison turned himself in to police on Saturday. It's a sad story. I've never noticed it before, but at the Herald Bulletin site, you can attach comments directly to stories. This is a good idea in a way, but I wonder if they moderate them at all?
Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts on pocket bikes? They're illegal to ride on the roads, so why are they still sold? I looked around, but I couldn't find any tallies of how many pocket bike related deaths there have been in Indiana. Anyone out there know?
What makes the story a little relevant to Muncie is a thread started by 'Scooter Head' over at The Star Press forums. While not talking about 'pocket bikes' specifically, they are brought up in the conversation. I just wish they were talking about it here so we could moderate the signal from the noise. ;)
