Culture of Corruption
Democrats have used the term "culture of corruption" to describe the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives.Does anyone remember that this is the same term Republicans used to describe Democrats just prior to their taking the majority in the House, in 1994 and then later when they described the Clinton Administration.
It seems to me that we go from one set of corrupt politicians to another set of corrupt politicians. Remember Jim Wright and Gary Studds, Democrats of past Congresses. It seems whenever a single party is in power for several years they become corrupt, or perhaps the corrupt just rise to the surface. In a sort of Gresham's law of politics, corrupt legislators push aside the good ones.
We the voters of this country should be angry. I can tell you that I am. But, there is an answer. TERM LIMITS!!! Yes I know it is radical but it would force some of the more corrupt legislators out of office before they can do much damage.
Of course, that would push out some of the more effective and honest legislators out as well. That's simply the price we must pay for a more honest and ethical legislature.
Some say that the voters have a responsibility to impose term limits by simply not re-electing corrupt legislators. That simply does not work and will not work in our system. Consider that while most voters believe that in general Congress is corrupt, most don't believe their own legislator to be corrupt. Witness the continuted re-election of Tom Delay, Bob Ney, Duke Cunningham, and others. This is the reason why 98% of incumbants get re-elected. The only answer is a constitutional amendment to impose term limits. I suggest one term for senators and no more than three terms for representatives.
