Major Moves Work at I-70 and U.S. 27 Enters new Phase

RICHMOND, IN - Construction crews are wrapping up the first phase of Major Moves construction at I-70 and U.S. 27. Over the next few weeks, new traffic patterns will be put into effect in the work zone as contractors shift to bridge work for the winter.Weather permitting, both directions of U.S. 27 will be shifted east toward the new pavement and bridge over the Whitewater River on Wednesday, December 27. At this time, the new lanes of U.S. 27 will have access to both Arba Pike and Tingler Road east of U.S. 27. Tingler Road west of U.S. 27 will be closed for a few hours that day to build a temporary ramp to address the difference in elevation between the new and old pavement.
Additional restrictions are anticipated to start Monday, January 8 as contractors begin demolishing existing bridges to make way for new construction. The U.S. 27 bridge over I-70 will be reconstructed into a single-point interchange, beginning with the western half. As a result, traffic at the bridge will be restricted to one lane in each direction on the existing northbound lanes.
Interchange ramps will remain open in the existing configuration, but bridge work calls for nighttime lane closures on I-70. Earlier this month, contractors completed reinforced, wider shoulders in the median of I-70, and shifted both directions of interstate traffic to the left, in preparation for this work.
Demolition crews will also remove the original U.S. 27 bridge over the Whitewater River to build southbound lanes for the new bridge. INDOT urges motorists in all of Indiana's road construction zones to follow posted speed limits and stay alert for changing road conditions.
Part of the Major Moves highway program, this $28 million project will reconstruct the I-70 and U.S. 27 interchange and 1.5 miles of U.S. 27. Major Moves fully funds nearly $12 billion in highway construction projects across Indiana through 2015.  It unlocks economic opportunities for Hoosiers and will leave a legacy for Indiana to be the global leader in distribution and logistics.
