Downtown Muncie: Canan Commons kicks off summer season with Music, Free Movies and More

Free Movies and More for Downtown Muncie this Summer

By Rick Yencer

MUNCIE, IN - Look for Canan Commons to come alive Saturday with music, a film and some new equipment to make it the summer entertainment center for downtown Muncie.

The first of three concerts feature Souled Out, one of the Doc Peterson spinoff bands, will play at 8 p.m. on the stage next to the Muncie YMCA. Then look for the movie Footloose 2012 on a new inflatable screen thanks to the Muncie Redevelopment Commission. The $2.2 million facility already has ben the scene of Friday Brown Bag music and some YMCA events. Even Occupy Muncie and some other entertainment groups have been hanging out there.

Vicki Veach, downtown development director, gave the MRC a heads up on the facility this week, besides a request by Mayor Dennis Tyler to fund some much needed equipment to use the stage and park for entertainment. Canan Commons was dedicated last fall, stood silent for months, and recently came alive as artists, musicians and activists began using the park.

Tyler put together a group with help from Muncie Downtown Development Partnership to find out what was needed to get the facility up and running. It was the same task that was needed to finish out work at Tuhey Pool after it opened at the end of last summer.

The obvious need is to have a backdrop for the stage that is next to the downtown railroad and a screen for movies. There is also a need for safety rails on the stage, gating to secure the site for pay concerts and other crowd control and traffic barriers.

Mr Mouse Music Hall in Yorktown a big hit

By Rick Yencer

YORKTOWN, IN - The big opening of the Mr. Mouse Music Hall had more than 500 people pass through its doors, proving that it will be a rock and roll summer in the growing green community.

And proprietor Amy Carrow, the daughter of food and beverage veterans Buddy and Judy Carrow, knows that great music and keeping the food and drink going is a key to success in the 2012 world of entertainment.

On Thursday, Carrow secured her second license for the Music Hall operation next to the renown Mr. Mouse that she took over a year ago. By busting out a wall, and making the old Brother Jimmy"s Winkle bar accessible to her patio and Mr. Mouse bar, it definitely is the place for veteran party people to be seen and have fun.

Muncie Gras 2012 a huge success

MUNCIE, IN - Wall to wall people is what made Muncie Gras 2012 great Saturday night as music rocked and boobs popped out for the annual downtown party.

And every hotel room in Muncie was booked, according to some travelers who had to travel to Anderson to find a room and compete with Hoosier Park patrons and that  Church of God crowd. Muncie Gras, along with a big women's soccer match at Ball State University, kept the hotel, food and beverage industry going strong for a weekend of spring break.

Muncie Living Lightly Fair at Minnetrista Cultural Center

Imagine drinking water out of a bottle made of oil or a river too dirty for a cleanup. Those were some of the issues at Muncie's Living Lightly Fair Saturday at Minnetrista Cultural Center as the day gave away to the music of Muncie songwriter and singer Jennie DeVoe and magnificent art of Ball State's orchid keeper, Cheryl LeBlanc.

MUNCIE, IN - Jeff Ellison, CEO & founder of RebelCat Records, recently announced the release of the new Ten-O-One (10:01) CD. The band 10:01 (who you may remember packing club after club in the 1980's) never released these tracks back when they were recorded due to circumstances beyond the band's control.
