A Libertarian Perspective: The Art of Guessing

By Rex Bell

One of the highlights of the summer when I was growing up was the Mooreland Free Fair. Come to think of it, it's still one of the highlights of the summer. I suppose everybody that attends the fair has their own favorite attractions. My favorite is getting the chance to see old friends.

Brian Howey: Quayle, Bayh and the veepstakes revisited

By Brian Howey

INDIANAPOLIS - As I worked the news desk at the Elkhart Truth on a Saturday night in August 1988, I penned the bold headline: “Quayle awaits GOP promotion.” When I returned to the newsroom the following Monday, the ridicule machine was in high gear. Vice President Quayle? The owner, John Dille, stopped by and ribbed me. “You must be kidding?” he said.

The great soprano Maria Callas once said an opera begins long before the curtain goes up and ends long after it has come down.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN  - Next Wednesday, Gov. Mitch Daniels will travel to Evansville and with delighted local officials will break ground on the I-69 extension to the state capital. It is an event that has been talked about and promised by Govs. Bowen, Orr, Bayh and O'Bannon for more than a generation. And Gov. Brian Howey: Time ticks away in Thompson’s Democratic house

By Brian Howey

NASHVILLE, Ind. - Jill Long Thompson gave a spiritual speech on Saturday at the Indiana Democratic Convention.  It was too bad that only one Indiana TV station bothered to send a crew to capture the first female gubernatorial nominee set the tone for her coming campaign.  She talked of her family homestead in Whitley County.  "That farmhouse really did look the same as it did in the 1930s," she said, noting the time when her family descended on the homestead for remodeling. "The same slate roof, the same sturdy porch, the same white paint.  But in many ways it had changed."

Letter: It's a Slippery Slope to War: Ask Your Rep to Oppose H. Con. Res. 362

The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a new resolution that could effectively demand a blockade against Iran -- an act that would be widely seen as an act of war and could invite Iranian retaliation, possibly leading us into a shooting war.

Over the last three weeks, 77 House Democrats and 92 Republicans have agreed to cosponsor this resolution, but we think many do not realize its dangerous implications.

Martha’s Big Adventure: Catch and Release

By Martha Randolph Carr

There are a lot of TV shows these days devoted to helping us get rid of the general clutter in our lives. It has been pointed out that American attics and closets are packed with stuff we haven’t looked at in years. There are even rooms in our houses that could be used for guests or a home office that are teeming with clothes that no longer fit or appliances missing a needed part. We keep those doors firmly shut, unwilling to face the aggravation or the anxiety. We’re reluctant to sort through any of it to see what someone else might be able to use, what could be recycled or what is ready for the trash.
